What a private AI assistant does
A private AI assistant answers questions in plain language using your own documents. Ask "what is our return policy for business clients?" and it finds the relevant passages, writes a clear answer and shows the source so your team can check it.
How it works: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
The technique behind it is called retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG. Your documents are split into passages and indexed. When someone asks a question, the system first retrieves the most relevant passages, then a language model writes the answer from those passages only. The model is not retrained on your data, and answers stay grounded in what your documents actually say.
Keeping your data safe
Data privacy is the first question companies ask, and rightly so. A well-designed assistant respects existing access rights: an employee only gets answers from documents they are allowed to see. Documents can be stored in your own cloud account or on your servers, and you can choose AI providers that do not use your data for training, or run open-source models locally when confidentiality requires it.
Where to start
Start with one well-defined area: HR policies, technical documentation, the product catalog or customer support answers. Measure how often the assistant answers correctly and how much time it saves, then extend it to other teams. Most companies have a working pilot within a few weeks.
